The Story of Bakki, From Naked Units to a Landmark in the Icelandic Landscape

Iceland’s untouched nature is breathtaking, but the country has never been known for its abundance of public rest stops.

That changed with the opening of the Laufey Welcome Centre in Bakki — Iceland’s first fully self-service travellers stop, open 24/7.

The centre features a shop, interactive information, a restaurant, and most importantly: clean and safe restroom facilities.

For this first location in a larger rollout, we delivered five ‘naked’ Revolving Toilets, including one wheelchair-accessible unit.

Now fully integrated into the Welcome Centre, these restrooms have become a crucial part of the overall visitor experience.

To date, more than 16,500 visitors have used our Revolving Toilets — a clear sign that public sanitation is not a luxury, but a necessity.
After all, everyone deserves access to a safe and hygienic restroom — at any time.

Thanks to smart monitoring and a strong local partnership, availability has been exceptional:
at least one restroom has been available 100% of the time, with an average uptime of 95% or higher per unit.

This is a project we’re proud of — but it’s also just the beginning.
